Martin Forkel started his career with his local side, Viktoria DJK Coburg. There he remained for eight years, the longest he's ever been at a club. In 1994, Forkel was sold to VfB Coburg, again, in his hometown. He was at VfB for considerably less time than he was at Viktoria for, just the one season in total. After that season, Martin Forkel joined TSV Vestenbergsgreuth where he played for a further season. Then he was signed by Greuther Furth where he spent three years. His most recent club before joining TuS Koblenz was SV Wacker Burghausen.
From 11 August 2006 to summer 2010, Forkel was at German Bundesliga 2 team, TuS Koblenz. In the 2006–07 season, Forkel scored his only Bundesliga 2 goal so far.
